peaceful New Year's Day

New Year's Day 2021 was a peaceful New Year's Day for me and my wife.

On a clear morning, I prayed for the first sunrise of the year and thanked God for the new year.

My wife woke up slowly and I ate her homemade cake, which I couldn't eat last night because I was too full.
I never thought I'd have cake for breakfast on New Year's Day!
It seems that in the Philippines, cakes are always a part of New Year's.

For lunch, I made Zoni and ate it with Osechi.

The zoni is Hakata zoni, which I have been making for the past few years.
In Kanto, rice cakes are square, but in Hakata, they are round. I found this at the supermarket in early December and bought it.
Hakata Zoni is made with flying fish soup stock, yellowtail (a fish that brings good luck), dried shiitake mushrooms, and taro.
I passed on the taro this time.
Garnish with bonito greens, but they are not sold in supermarkets in the Kanto region.
This time, I added chizimis mustard, which looks exactly the same. This is accompanied by red and white kamaboko.

I used the Hakata Zoni broth made from flying fish dashi, which was included in the "Hakata" Osechi of Hakata Hisamatsu, and added the broth made from soaking dried shiitake mushrooms in water.

By the way, there are a lot of sweet dishes in Osechii cuisine, but there are also a lot of dishes that are perfect snacks for sake.

The merienda was another fruit salad made by my wife. It is more like a fruit punch than a salad.

I had a really peaceful New Year's Day, reading a book and having my wife give me a haircut, so I hope this year will be a peaceful one.
