One of the most common reasons for Filipino students' poor performance in mathematics is a lack of English language skills.
Therefore, there is a movement to make math classes available in Filipino.
A project has been launched to support this movement.
JICA, the Philippine Department of Education, and Japanese educational publisher Keirinkan have partnered to introduce a digital paper textbook for Visayan mathematics.
Sakamoto, JICA's chief representative, said, "Improving teaching materials is critical to improving the teaching of subjects such as math, science, and reading in schools, and with this digital paper textbook, JICA can help Filipinos become more globally competitive and equip young people with important skills that will brighten their future."
The Smart Lecture is a teaching material designed to deepen comprehension by repeatedly viewing explanatory videos linked to a paper textbook.
I think the biggest advantage is the ability to learn in Visayan.
The video data is small enough to be easily accessible in the Philippine Internet environment, and can be used on PCs, tablets, and smartphones, allowing students to study anywhere.
The system has already been introduced in Cagayan de Oro, where math scores have improved significantly and 95% of teachers are willing to use the system.
We have decided to get a tutor for our 10 year old son starting in the new school year, but I would love to have him take this Smart Lecture when he gets to Junior High School.
